Coach Greg

I grew up running track but somehow found myself coaching youth baseball for 8 years. The only thing I knew about the game was that my childhood friends were amazing at it.

As a kid’s baseball coach who couldn’t teach a player how to hit, throw, or field, my role was to be "Coach Frog," which meant I kicked young ballplayers in the butt when they were down or didn’t hustle. I was the coach to tell a player to stop crying about the strike zone, and I was known to celebrate a little too much when a kid reached first base because they hustled out a grounder.

Coach Frog and Whiff

I’ve wanted to publish a youth baseball book for years, but as a procrastinator, I could never finish one. One idea started with a hilarious true story about a young ballplayer who played with a frog in his pocket. In the next chapter, I wrote about a kid crying and thought, that kid could have used a coach in his pocket. That’s when Coach Frog was born. It took me less than two hours to write the story, but nearly two years to illustrate it, partly because my illustrator knew even less about baseball than I did!

I have countless memories and stories from my coaching days that I want to share, and I hope I'll find the time to bring them all to life.
